The seven of us thought we might be rushing the season a bit. But although the temperature was cold, the early spring flowers beckoned us from the Beekman House woods on up the hill to the sunnier, flowerier hilltops. Shooting stars were, in fact, the star of the show, in bright pink abundance. Hound’s tongue, Western buttercup and Scarlett fritillary/Red bells were beginning to show themselves, along with Milk maids, Miner’s lettuce, Saxifrage, a few Fawn lilies and one brave Groundsel. In the shrub category, Oregon grape was vibrantly yellow, while White manzanita’s creamy bell flowers and lovely Red current added their color.

Collette , you’ll be happy to know magnifying loupes and lens were used extensively. Your clever memory aids — pistol packin’ mama and staymen stay men– were enthusiastically adopted and sparked very lively conversation.

After wandering around aimlessly for some time, we headed back down the hill into town for rejuvenating margaritas and Mexican food (sans NancyS). All in all, a great way to begin the season.
