Hobart Bluff
On Wednesday May 15, 2024 we had 15 hikers travel up the Greensprings to hike to Hobart Bluff. The sky was blue and the sun was warm. It was around 70° when we started the hike.
As we made our way up the PCT, we could see that many wildflowers were in bloom. A little before we reached the 1 mile mark, Sherry found a morel mushroom. She has a knack for spotting them. We continued on through the forest and made our way around and over some downed logs. We then turned and made out way up the Hobart Bluff Trail. As we headed up, we could see that the Arrowleaf Balsamroot were covering the hillside. We came across a group of around 30 kids and 3 or 4 adults from Walker elementary School. They were all very well mannered and gave way to us by stepping aside as we were the uphill hikers. One excited young man addressed us all saying, Hello Hikers- there are scorpions up there, and a few other details about the top.
We enjoyed a nice lunch at the top with views of Mount McLoughlin, Mount Ashland, Pilot Rock, Mount Shasta. We had some nice Sharffen Berger 70% chocolate with cherries and almonds provided by Michael.
After lunch, the group headed back and Bob and Mark went out to the overlook above Hobart Lake. As we went down the trail, we noticed many more Chocolate Checkered Fritillaria that we had seen on the way up. We also looked for more morels but had no luck. We arrived back at the cars a little before 2pm. We had hiked 7.28 miles with 1411 feet of elevation gain. The temperature was up to 90° by the time I reached home.
