Black Butte
Seventeen of us headed south to climb Black Butte, a short but steep hike with lots of big rocks in the way. The weather was perfect, with clear skies and mid 60 degree weather to start, finishing in the low to mid 70’s.
We headed up through the forest trail and quickly arrived at a clearing where Mt. Shasta and the northern valley were clearly seen. The trail winds counter clockwise around from the east side to the west side, then heads up between the two “peaks” and finally up a series of switchbacks to the top.
The views on top, with Mt. Shasta so close and covered with snow, are some of the best among all our hikes. After hiking back down to the cars, many of us took refreshments at the Jefferson’s Roadhouse Cafe in Yreka.
