Castle Crags to Castle Dome
Hiking to Castle Dome is one of the best hikes in our portfolio. It might be a bit steep and have a few large rocks in the path, but the views are just out of this world. Seven of us first hiked to the vista point to get a quick look of things to come (Mt. Shasta and the Castle Crags). Then off we went to make the hike up to Castle Dome. There was a group coming back from their trip to the top to see the sunrise (20 somethings – they told us that we looked like we had spunk). The trail was in excellent condition and soon we were seeing up close views of the Castle Crags and Mt. Shasta in the distance.
The last 3/4 mile of trail was a bit more difficult than some of us remembered, due to lots of big rocks and the steepness. Upon arriving at the lunch spot, we enjoyed some sunshine and the incredible views. After lunch, some of us hiked farther up towards the top of the rocks for a different view of the valleys and rocks in the area. Although there was no real trail, we were able to follow a gully up for most of the time, avoiding much of the Manzanita bushes, but still had a few obstacles.
We all headed down to the cars after lunch and the extra credit hiking. Refreshments were taken at the Jefferson’s Roadhouse, where the onion rings and service were excellent.
