Crater Lake – Garfield Peak
It was hit or miss as to whether smoke would prevent this hike, but AirNow had a good reading early in the AM so off we went. We arrived to find light smoke in the area. The temperature was in the low seventies when we began the 1,000 foot ascent. We took our time, stopping to catch our breath, cool down in the shade, and enjoy the fabulous views.
The foot traffic was low for this time of year and there were only a few people on the summit when we arrived. There was light smoke in the Crater but the water was absolutely still, so there were lots of clear reflections off the Lake.
After lunch we headed down. The temperature gradually rose but there was a cool breeze half way down and it blew the smoke off the Lake. It was 85 degrees when we reached the car so we enjoyed the cool water I had brought along.
On the way home we took an ice cream break at Phil’s Frosty, then later enjoyed a beverage at Kerr Manor.
