Kelsey Creek
Nine hikers headed to Kelsey Creek to see what Mother Nature had done this year. This is a great hike in the spring, hiking up next to a raging creek for 4.5 miles and having lunch with the thundering creek and Maple Falls right in front of us. The weather was perfect, starting out in the low 60’s and ending the hike in the mid 70’s.
There were plenty of flowers, along with lots of dogwood trees in bloom. Along the trail were many waterfalls for our added enjoyment. Of course the poison oak was growing like crazy and trying to takeover the path in a few places. The trail ended at a landslide, which happened last year, that had cleared enough trees to unblock the view of Maple Falls. Yes, the falls also were significantly altered by this very large landslide (think 600 feet wide and a 1,000 feet long). Because of the altered landscape, our views during lunch were spectacular of the falls and the cascading creek.
We did have to cross several active creeks, but everyone made it safely, although one person did have an accident on the trail. All were fine by the time we returned to the cars and refreshments were taken outside on the deck at the Jefferson’s Roadhouse in Yreka.
