Hobart Bluff

Ashland Hiking Group Posted on December 20, 2023 by Randy BryanMay 16, 2024

Sixteen of us gathered to hike from Greenspring along the PCT to Hobart Bluff. What an unusual opportunity to do this hike in December without snow. Our weather was true to forecast, partly cloudy to partly sunny skies. Even though we started at a mild 40 degrees, there was a chilly bite with the winds. All felt much more comfortable hiking amongst the trees.

The trail was in good shape except for a large downfall around the 2 mile mark. Because of the tree’s abundance of protruding, broken branches, it was a careful high hurdle for all 16 of us. Since this is a substantial trail hazard, Francie will report it to the Siskiyou Mt. Club for clearing.

Continuing on our Hike to the top for lunch, we were met with partly sunny skies and good views of Mt. McLoughlin and Mt. Ashland. Since the chilling winds accompanied our views many of us found comfort along the rocky bluff.

Our return after lunch gave us another viewing of the many mushrooms, including a fairy ring, and the winter beauty of the snowberries. Before all was done, Barry had his own intimate viewing of a young gopher snake coiled up amongst the rocks. By 1:45 we were back at our cars and ready to transition to celebration festivities at Caldera.

Our gathering at Caldera grew to a reunion of 23 people, celebrating Francie’s first year as hiker leader and Dan’s tireless service for the amazing AHG website. While applause and gifts of gratitude were shared with Francie and Dan, John shared his poem of bushwhack Wednesday’s hiking with Dan.

What a fabulous day with the Wednesday AHG!
