Grizzly Peak
We welcomed some new hikers from Medford, three from the Rogue Valley Manor. Eleven of us enjoyed our classic local Grizzly Peak hike. Most hiked the loop, while two of us hiked RT to the Ashland Viewpoint out on the rocks, taking the spur trail in and out for the view there before reaching the rock outcrop to meet the others.
These hikes amounted to 5.4 miles (elevation gain 750’) for the loop, and 5.0 miles RT (elevation gain 700’) for the RT in and out. The day was so beautiful and clear, we were able to spot Mt. Thielsen beyond Mt. McLoughlin and the rim of Crater Lake. Once on the Ashland Viewpoint rocks we had clear views to Mt. Shasta and of course Mt. Ashland, Pilot Rock, and the mountain range to the west gracing our valley. While having lunch there, Cindy collected Ziploc bags from us and set off to pick Elderberries for making jam.
Familiar as this hike may be to most of us, the views and flora continue to delight. Douglas Fir, grand fir, lovely meadows, bright red berries, and even one cluster of late fading blue larkspur. It was a happy day for all.
