Little Hyatt Lake
I took the dog for a loop around Little Hyatt Lake today. We started at the Hyatt Dam Road / PCT cross and headed SW down to the lake. The initial sections of the trail had some blowdown, LBFs (Little Blue Flowers), Vole tunnel mazes and spots of snow. Otherwise it was unremarkable. Temperatures were in the 60s.
The bypass piping around the dam has been removed and it looks like the dam has been left to the elements. A few years ago locals were trying to raise $250,000 to save the dam, but were evidently unsuccessful.
Hyatt Creek, which connects Hyatt Lake and Little Hyatt Lake (Actually Hyatt Reservoir), should have been in full flow at this time of year. Instead, it was basically a mud and grass flat. Not good news for irrigators or firefighters this summer.
On the way back to the car we had a very pleasant and unexpected encounter with an Ashland flower hiking group. Seemed to be nice people.
On the way home I swung by the old Hyatt Resort and took a picture of the very low lake water level. Plenty of dirt where there should have been a lake.
