Fish Lake to High Lake Trail
Nine hikers met to do a shuttle hike along the Fish Lake Trail to the High Lakes trail. We started near the North Fork Campground and walked along the North Fork of the Little Butte Creek. The weather forecast was for rain, but we were lucky enough to avoid much more than a little sprinkle.
We came to Fish Lake and had views of Brown Mountain with a little snow cover. From there we made our way to the Fish Lake trail and then connected to the High Lakes Trail. We saw a dead bird on the side of the trail (pictured so don’t look if you are sensitive). Barry and Leslie analyzed it and decided it was an Osprey.
As we hiked along we saw more mushrooms than I think I have ever seen. One was a Bearhead that was as big as my head. Liz harvested a smaller one. I gave the location of the large one to Jim, who used to hike with our Ashland Hiking Group, and he went in a few days later and harvested it. It was reported back to me that they taste delicious!
We took our lunch at a spot on the trail that intersects a horse trail. After continuing the hike, we walked through lava flows and had a great view of Mount McLoughlin. We hiked around 9.5 miles and had a little over 1,000 feet of elevation gain.
