Songer Butte
Our hiker’s luck continued Monday as the predicted precipitation didn’t make an appearance during our hike at Emigrant Lake. We moved our scheduled hike to Porcupine Mountain to a later date when the weather is better. Instead we moved up the hike to Songer Butte via the Songer Wayside Trail.
We six hikers turned into the Wayside turnoff 8 miles down Highway 66 before 9:30 dressed for rain and cold. We had calm weather with temps in the 40s.
We negotiated our way along the grassy trail and up the back of the 2,700′ Butte. We arrived on top at 11 AM and had views of the south valley including a fog bank over Ashland that we soon realized was moving towards us. Within 15 minutes the views were gone and we were surrounded by fog.
We had an early lunch topped off with dark coffee chocolate. then made our way down through the overcast.
This short hike is only 4 miles with about 600′ of gain. It’s convenient from town and offers good exercise going up the butte with great views on top… on a clear day.
