Black Butte
We started the hike in low 40 degree weather and generally clear skies. This relatively short hike (5.2 miles round trip) starts out in the forest, crosses several rock fields and then ascends to the top. Several of the rock fields in the shade were slick due to frost covering many of the rocks. After we got more in the sun, the rocks dried up and the views were incredible both on the trail and up on top.
We could see from the Crags to Mt. Eddy to Mt. Ashland to Mt. McLoughlin to Aspen Butte. Oh – and then there was the massive Mt. Shasta that was right next to us, which has a new blanket of very white snow. AWESOME!
Obviously we took a long lunch to soak up the views and sun. There were around 10 other people hiking up the Butte as we were coming down.
Refreshments were taken at the Jefferson’s Roadhouse in Yreka.
