Kerby Peak
The drive to the TH was about 1:45 including two road construction stops on Highway 199 and two tree trimming stops on Deer Creek Road. The road is paved all the way to the TH except for the final 3 miles which are good condition gravel.
Temperatures started in the high 30s and finished the day in the high 40s. Bright sunshine all day except for about 15 minutes on top when we were in the clouds.
The trail started out dry but as we wound our way upward along the switchbacks we went from a light dusting to an inch or so of snow by the time we hit the ridge. Along the ridge the snow was 2″ to 4″ in most places, but we had easy walking.
The peak is a bit deceptive. As you approach you think that it is only one or two more switchbacks away. This happens multiple times until you finally reach the summit.
On the way home we stopped at Four Daughters. We may have over ordered a bit, encouraged by their new after 4:00 PM Appy menu which offers appetizers for $3.00. In addition to our usual French fries and sweet potato fires we also ordered fried green beans, fried mushrooms, and everybody’s favorite, fried pickles.
We all liked this hike quite a bit and thanked Scout Beverly for suggesting it. We plan to put it on the schedule again in the spring of 2015.
