Stein Butte
Ten of us headed out past the Applegate Reservoir to hike up to the top of Stein Butte. It was a generally clear day but lower temperatures in the mid 30’s to start. This hike has a steady pitch up for almost the entire hike, with a few level spots where you can catch your breath.
Once we were out of the forest hill climb, the views became amazing. We had several wardrobe changes in route. It was very cold in the shade and warm in the sun, so some of us used that as an excuse to stop and rest a few minutes while changing coats.
The last 1/4 mile pitch up to the summit was tough but worth the effort for the open views. We could see Mt. McLoughlin on one side and the Red Buttes on the other. The sun was out, plus there were places to sit for lunch and no wind. Lunch was one of the high points of the hike.
After a leisurely lunch, we headed back down to the cars. Given the snow covered peaks seen in the distance, it was good that we did not encounter any snow on the trail. Everyone had a good time and we were glad to be able to sit down in a car seat for the ride home.
