Upper Union Creek Trail
For the Monday group a new hike that started in September 2020 finally was able to finish on October 2, thanks to the trail being cleared for 1.5 miles down to the bridge crossing.
And we are happy to announce it’s a very nice hike through open forest down to the creek; then along the creek cascading over ancient lava beds. We followed the newly opened trail cleared of heavy vegetation through old growth forests with huge trees in a calm environment.
We had good hiking weather starting in the 40s and reaching the high 50s. We dressed in layers and stopped for water and wardrobe adjustments when the sun came out.
We found a trail sign that read “Constructed by YCC (Youth Conservation Corps) 1988, that told us when the trail was first opened. No doubt youth volunteers were also involved in this recent clearing, which was a Big Job and we are grateful for their efforts.
This hike is a 7 mile out and back so 3.5 each way with not more than 300′ of gain.
We felt tiny raindrops in the home stretch with the cars in sight so no need to dawn rain gear, although Jerry did put his umbrella up.
Post hike we stopped at Beckie’s for some delicious pie!
Note:The scheduled Fall Colors hike on the Upper Rogue was put off for a week or two to give the color changes a chance to really set in…standby.
