Songer Butte
With perfect hiking weather, 15 of us hiked through lots of oaks, occasional madrone and tallgrass fields, up over the oasis of rocks, down into an expansive meadow with various trail junctions and on up to the base of the climb to Songer Butte. Some of us ascended to the Butte for the magnificent views over the valley; others of us returned to the comfort of the meadow for lunch.
We enjoyed a panoply of wildflowers in full bloom throughout the hike, including larkspur, flowering fiddleheads, blue-eyed Marys, cat ears, blue dick, butter cups, and many others. Our return included a partial loop. We’d traveled 4.8-5.2 miles. Most encouraging was to see Emigrant Lake having recovered some water level during recent snow and rain storms (certainly not where we’d like it to be).
