Castle Craigs to Indian Springs via Flume Trail
We were going to try out a new hike for most of us near Shasta, but early in the AM Nanci C. texted me that the trail was closed according to the Forest Service Office. So we changed to Plan B – hiking to Indian Springs along the Flume Trail at Castle Crags. Thus we changed from a relatively flat 10 mile hike to one with 2,000 feet of vertical. Everyone agreed to go, so off we went. We were greeted by a ranger at the entrance, which we had not experienced in over 2 years.
The trail was in good shape but the up portion is over 5 miles long. Since we got a later than normal start for this hike, it was after 1 PM before we had a “Maria” type lunch, basking in the sun with wonderful views. The hike down was less than 4 miles, so we still arrived back in Ashland by 5 PM. It was a bigger than normal group at 14 but everyone stayed together and had a good time.
