Charlie Buck Trail to Baldy Peak
Ten of us headed out to the Applegate for hiking to the top of Baldy Peak. This is a short but very steep hike, climbing almost 1,600 feet in about 1.6 miles. Besides being steep, the trail was in good condition until we hit the last pitch up to the summit, where there is no trail. We basically scrambled up a 45 degree slope while going north and up about 500 feet. Once on top the views were good, but somewhat limited by the clouds.
We took several “view” breaks on the way up. At one point someone’s pack started rolling down the hill but thanks to Nanci’s fast reaction, it was stopped before going the rest of the way to the bottom. Lunch was enjoyed by all until we noticed a rain storm coming our way, so we packed, covered up and headed back down. However, the rain never arrived. Instead we were treated to blue sky and puffy white clouds.
We were all glad to be back to the cars but the group seemed to enjoy the hike despite being very steep (have I said that before?) and short.
