Pederson Nordic Trail
Seven of us headed up DIM to chase the snow storm and for the first snowshoe hike of the season. It was windy, cold and snowing when we arrived but we were all excited to get out and see the snowy wonderland.
We encountered between 6 and 18 inches of snow along the trail. On the way to the shelter for lunch, it was calm and lightly snowing. The shelter has been cleaned from head to toe and stocked with lots of firewood. It was the cleanest I have ever seen it. Lunch was wonderful, being fully protected from the outside elements.
We then headed to do a small loop towards Brown Mountain and back to the cars. As seen in the group picture, it started to really snow. A bit later the wind decided to join in the fun. By the time we had reached the cars we had been blown around and the trees were trying to snow bomb us as we walked under the swaying 100 foot trees.
This turned out to be one of the best snowshoe hikes many of us had experienced. It was only 4.5 miles long and relatively flat, but the perfect first snowshoe event of the year. Driving home was also interesting. By then the storm was in full gear. There was lots of snow in the air and on the road, so we were all glad to get back to Ashland.
