Pilot Rock Road to Babbitt Gap RT – Ashland Hiking Group

A cool breeze invigorated our group of seven hikers as we headed on the PCT to Babbitt Gap on the backside of Pilot Rock. We started on the Pilot Rock Road off Highway 99, parking where the PCT crosses the dirt road. The group welcomed Elisabeth back from her travels.

A black-headed grossbeak was singing and there were many thimbleberry, sulfur and arrowleaf buckwheat, and orange honeysuckle wildflowers blooming. We were delighted with several large stands of coyote mint covered with orange fritillary butterflies.

All enjoyed the clear views of Mt. Shasta and Mt. McLaughlin. The upper part of the trail through the forest with ferns was most welcome. We enjoyed a stunning view of the far side of Pilot Rock before sitting under shady trees for lunch.

Coming back orange butterflies were still feasting on the coyote mint. The last part of the trail in the exposed ridges was warming up and we were glad to complete the hike. Total distance: 6 miles.
