Box O Ranch – Soday Mtn Wilderness
On Monday we welcomed new and returning hikers that swelled the group to 17. All eager to explore another new hike. This time in the Soda Mountain Wilderness.
Heading out on Highway 66, our caravan of 6 vehicles followed the lead car up and over the Greensprings Summit to a right turn onto Copco Road. Once all caught up, Jerry led us down the dirt road to view Shoat Springs, streaming out of a rock wall.
Then it was back to our dusty cars and back up Copco to the left turn off for Box O Ranch. The cattle ranch was active from 1983 until 1995 when BLM took over the property in a land swap with the owners. Now the land, still with the old ranch house and barn, is available for hiking the 5 mile loop around the pasture which is bordered by Jenny Creek.
We found shade and a picnic table at the barn and had our lunch. Then we followed the old ranch road back and hiked up the hill to the cars.
About half stopped at Coco Rico (formerly the Greensprings Inn) for refreshments on the deck.
Next Monday we’ll hike up Grizzly Peak and perhaps Lost Creek Falls.
All are welcomed.
