Enchanted Forest
On Monday we decided to put a new twist on the Enchanted Forest hike and do a salute to the Wednesday group by hiking up to Sabin’s Saddle. So instead of turning right off the Enchanted Forest Trail where the sign pointed to the Felton Memorial Trail, we ten continued up the Enchanted Forest Trail to the flattened out knoll on top some 1,568′ above our starting point.
Although some would called hiking up the grade a bit of a “slog”, we all arrived at the recently graded flat top where we were greeted by a huge Caterpillar earth mover and busy logging trucks moving up and down the logging road. The flat expanse had twin peaks at the north and south ends. After some discussion, Jerry borrowed a pair of hiking poles and bushwhacked up the north peak. He radioed back it was steep, rocky with not much of a view.
In the meantime, Linda had led about half of our party up the trail on the south peak where they found good views of the Applegate valley near Sabin’s Saddle. Four of us waited below for Jerry’s return and had a leisurely lunch with plenty of time to catch our breath.
The forest, beautifully refreshed by the recent rains, now had the afternoon sun shining through the trees and illuminating the leaves as we made our descent. Giant Maple leaves paved the path in shades of gold and yellow.
Six of us stopped by Boomtown for beer and fries.

Covid Update: A recent spike in Covid19 cases in Oregon has led to a two week restriction in some activities starting Wednesday Nov.18. Some in our group have taken a break from hiking due to Covid concerns. Each of us must decide what’s right for us and our families. My preexisting conditions (hypertension and diabetes ) crave activity and hiking works best for me. I will continue to hike on Mondays wearing my face mask and keeping social distance. You are invited to join me. We may split groups for Covid protection. And we may take some Mondays off during the Winter months.
