Gumboot Saddle to Boulder Peak
Nine of us headed south to Gumboot Saddle in order to climb Boulder Peak. This is one of the best hikes in our portfolio because of the incredible views of large mountains/rock formations almost the entire distance of the trail. It was a bit cold but perfect hiking weather.
We did see some snow along the way and when we were in the forest on the north side of the ridge for a short time, the trail was covered with a 1/2 inch of snow, but all was easy to navigate. Interesting that it is October 1st and we are still able to hike up around the 7,000 feet level.
Several lakes are in view along the trail, as is Mt. Shasta with a light dusting of snow. The last climb up the face of Boulder Peak is a challenge and is all bushwhacking. We had a wonderful lunch with a 360 degree view, which from my perspective is quite different than others. The rock formations (Mt. Shasta, Castle Crags, Mt. Lassen, Echo Lake) are all very close to our viewpoint. Going down the face seemed much easier after lunch than going up and we all made it back to the cars in good, but tired spirits.
Some of us stopped by the Mt. Shasta Resorta for some refreshments. It was a long day, but we all had a great time.
