East Boulder Lake to Middle Boulder Lake
We set out early with a group of 15 to try our new approach to the East Boulder Hike, using a shuttle left at Middle Boulder Lake and going in one direction.
The weather was absolutely perfect with a high of 74 and a cool breeze on the ridge. The views were spectacular as always. Shortly after the start we met a couple with 2 horses and 2 mules, in western garb. We later met a number of PCT hikers who had all done the Sierras. We also met Judy Finses and her daughter at Upper Boulder Lake. A small world. Last but not least we met a large number of high school age students doing an overnight trek.
We had lunch by the tree with a hole in it on the PCT as I was being drowned out by rumbling stomachs. On the way to the ridge and switch-backs we stopped to look at some views and crossed a small patch of snow where we were very careful due to the slope. The view from the top of the switch-backs was perfect in every way.
The descent to Middle Boulder Trail required some caution as the switch-backs were steep and the soil was loose. Our scouting trip paid off as we knew exactly where to turn left and bushwhack 50 yards and hit the trail, then follow the trail and later cairns in the huge meadow above Middle Boulder Lake. Thanks to Rich and Jerry for helping me with the scouting trip.
The new hike reduced the climb by 700 feet but it remains a strenuous hike of 9+ miles because some of the ascents are hard work and the long descent to the Middle Boulder TH is also hard work..
Some special thanks are in order. First to those in the group who supported a guest hiker who was in difficulty. It was AHG at its best. Second, to Bev for being a good sport when she had to quit early on and wait for us all day. Third, to Jean who offered her old CRV at the last minute as the shuttle car and straddled some obstacles that threatened to swallow her vehicle.
Everyone was tired after a long day but East Boulder remains the best of the best.and the new hike is a keeper.
