Kerby Peak
Although this is one of the more challenging hikes in our portfolio, we started with 14 people and met 2 more hikers up on top. However, as we were driving up the last mile of the road to the trail head we encountered a relatively new born fawn (I am thinking hours old), who was still learning how to walk. Unfortunately, his walking exercise was right up the middle of the road. We decided to wait for a clear road before passing. After the fawn walked (or stumbled) about 50 feet, the fawn finely exited to the right and onto a grassy area, along with mom. All seemed fine as we passed.
Back to the hike – today started out in the mid 60’s under cloudy skies. This hike climbs 800 feet every mile for 3.5 miles. We started out in the forest, then broke out once on the ridge for a bit, then back in the forest for the remainder of the hike to the top. We did make it to the top this time, unlike our failed attempt due to snow in April. The only snow we found was near the top and there was only 15 feet of hiking on the snow to make the ascent. YEA!
The dogwoods were out in bloom, along with many other flowers, including some small onions. Mushrooms were everywhere, along with ground cones. After lunch, we headed back down to the cars and took refreshments at Climate City Brewing Company in Grants Pass, where there was a wide selection of beers and great fries. I think we all agreed it was a great hike with wonderful views, despite the steep trail to get there.
