Black Butte
We had rain on the drive down but it cleared up by the time we were passing Weed. The road in from Everitt Memorial Highway is in fair shape, although it is still a good idea to use high clearance vehicles. During the day it warmed up from the high 40s into the low 60s under partly cloudy skys interspersed with sun breaks. Neither rain nor fog today for a pleasant change.
We were at the TH at 10:45 and on top by 12:45. The trail is in better condition than when we were last here in 2012. The 2 or 3 spots where the trail had been taken out by rock slides have been rebuilt.
FYI, the rocks in wire cages that are used to help retain the trail are called gabions. The name comes from the Italian “gabionnes” which means big cage.
We took our refreshment at the Goat.
